Open Dental is open-source dental practice management software, usually installed on a server in the office. Volty reaches it through Open Dental's API, which runs through the eConnector at the practice. A patient who asks to come in today sees which chairs are still open on WhatsApp and takes one, a patient whose cleaning date has come around gets a recall message with days to pick from, and the office manager asks Volty in team chat how many recall patients have nothing on the books.
Volty reads what is left on today's schedule before offering a time.
Patients past their cleaning date are invited back, with no reason given beyond the date.
If a patient starts describing how a tooth feels, Volty says it cannot discuss health details and offers a time or a call from your staff.
Nothing lands in Open Dental until the patient says yes to a time.

52 patients. 40 have a mobile number opted in to WhatsApp. Shall I send them the recall template?
Describe it to Volty in a sentence; it drafts the automation and an admin turns it on.

Open Dental's API pairs two keys: a Developer key, held by whoever builds the connection, and a Customer key generated for your office, which your staff enter in Open Dental to allow access. Remote API calls reach the office through the eConnector, so it must be running at the practice.
It has to be installed and running at your office.
Generated for your office for this connection; your staff enter it in Open Dental.
Patient contact details, appointments and recall dates, with read or write rights you choose.
Your admin approves the connection; booking starts Off.
Each one is a switch on the Sources page in Volty.
Reading tools can be turned on straight away. Anything that changes Open Dental starts Off, and once on it can be set to check with staff, so each change waits for a colleague.
Yes. Open Dental's API reaches an on-premise database through the eConnector, which must be installed and running at your office. If the eConnector is off, Volty cannot read the schedule, so the connection only works while that service runs.
Open Dental pairs a Developer key, held by whoever builds the connection, with a Customer key generated for your office. Your staff enter the Customer key in Open Dental to allow access, and the permissions set which resources can be read or changed. A Volty admin then approves the connection.
Volty does not assess it. It offers the next open time and your office phone number, and passes the thread to the front desk so a person decides how soon the patient should be seen. Volty is for scheduling and front-desk questions, not for health records, and does not sign a BAA.
