    Canvas Medical and Volty

Practices on Canvas Medical take new patients from web chat into Canvas through its FHIR API, and care managers ask Volty who on their panel still needs a visit.

Are you taking new patients? I just moved to Denver and need a primary care doctor.
VoltyYes, we are. Can I take your full name, date of birth and a phone number? Then I'll find you a first visit.

What Volty does with Canvas Medical

Canvas Medical is a customizable EMR built for developers, used for outpatient and value-based care. Canvas exposes a FHIR R4 API, so Volty can find a Patient, read Appointment slots and propose new records with the same resources your developers already use. Someone who just moved to town books a first visit from your web chat, and a care manager asks Volty in team chat which patients on her panel are due their yearly wellness visit and still have nothing booked. Volty reads only scheduling data from Canvas, never clinical records.

    • New patient sign-up in chat

Name, date of birth and phone become a proposed Patient record for staff to approve.

    • Slots from Canvas

Volty reads the provider's schedule through FHIR before offering a time.

    • Panel gaps on request

Care managers ask who is due and get names, not a report to run.

    • Health details go to the care team

If someone starts describing health details, Volty says it cannot discuss them and offers a visit or a call from a nurse.

How Volty connects to Canvas Medical

Canvas documents a FHIR R4 API that follows US Core, and a practice using Canvas as its EHR has access to its own data through it. Your practice arranges API credentials for its own Canvas instance, and Volty works with the Patient and Appointment resources you allow.

    1. 01

      Get credentials for your instance

API access to the practice's own Canvas data, arranged with your Canvas admin.

    2. 02

      Pick FHIR resources

Patient and Appointment, plus the care team list if outreach is wanted. Clinical resources stay out.

    3. 03

      Approve the connection

Our team sets it up as a custom connection; your Volty admin approves it.

    4. 04

      Writes start Off

Turn on patient creation and booking when you are ready, or route them to staff.

    The tools Volty gets

Each one is a switch on the Sources page in Volty.

    • Search FHIR PatientReads
    • Read Appointment availabilityReads
    • List a panel's patients due a visitReads
    • Propose a new Canvas patientChanges
    • Create a Canvas appointmentChanges

Reading tools can be turned on straight away. Anything that changes Canvas Medical starts Off, and once on it can be set to check with staff, so each change waits for a colleague.

    Common questions

Does Volty use Canvas's FHIR API?

Yes. Canvas documents a FHIR R4 API that follows US Core, and a practice using Canvas as its EHR can reach its own data through it. Volty reads Patient and Appointment resources only and, when you allow it, proposes new ones. Volty is for scheduling and front-desk questions, not for health records, and does not sign a BAA.

Can a new patient be created from a web chat?

Volty collects the name, date of birth and phone number and drafts a new Patient record with the first visit attached. Creating patients is a change tool that starts Off, and most practices keep it on Check with staff so someone confirms the record before it reaches Canvas.

Can we use Canvas plugins instead?

Canvas also has an SDK for plugins that react to events such as a new appointment. This connection works through the API, so no plugin has to be installed on your Canvas instance for Volty to read schedules or propose records.

How much does it cost to connect Canvas Medical with Volty?

Every Volty plan includes seats, active contacts and AI credits and starts with a free 7-day trial, and the plan prices are on voltade.com/pricing. Meta bills message charges separately for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
