WhatsApp error: template name not found

This error occurs when you send a template message and WhatsApp cannot find an approved template with that name in the language you asked for. The WhatsApp Business API returns it as error code 132001.

    Error Message

"(#132001) Template name does not exist in the translation"

    Why This Happens

A template send names two things: the template's name and its language code. WhatsApp looks for a template that matches both and is approved. The error means one of these is true:

  1. The name does not match. Template names are exact, lowercase and use underscores, so order_update and Order_Update are different templates.
  2. The template does not exist in that language. Each language of a template is a separate translation with its own approval. A template approved in en_US cannot be sent with the language code en or en_GB.
  3. The template is not approved yet. A template still in review, or one that was rejected, has no approved translation to send. (A paused or disabled template fails with its own error codes, 132015 and 132016.)
  4. The template belongs to a different WhatsApp Business Account. Templates are not shared between accounts, so a template created under one account cannot be sent from a number in another.

  5. How to fix this error

    1. Check the template name

Open WhatsApp Manager > Message Templates and copy the name exactly as it appears there. Compare it character by character with the name in your send.

    2. Check the language code

Open the template and look at the languages it has. Send with one of those codes exactly, for example en_US rather than en. If you need another language, add it to the template and wait for that translation to be approved.

    3. Check the approval status

The status of that language must be Active (approved). If it is in review, wait for the decision. If it was rejected, edit it and resubmit, or create a new template and submit that.

    4. Check the account

Make sure the template sits in the same WhatsApp Business Account as the phone number you are sending from.

If you were trying to send a normal message

A free-form message (not a template) sent more than 24 hours after the customer's last message fails with a different error, 131047 (re-engagement message). That one means the 24-hour customer service window has closed, and the fix is to send an approved template instead. See WhatsApp's 24-hour rule for how the window opens and closes.

    Best Practices

  6. Keep a list of your approved template names and the language codes each one is approved in
  7. Add every language you send in before you need it, since each one goes through review
  8. Recheck a template's status before a large broadcast, because Meta can pause a template whose quality drops
