What is WhatsApp display name approval?

WhatsApp display name approval is Meta's review of the business name shown to customers on a WhatsApp Business API number, which must be approved before that number can message anyone.

    What the rules are.

Your display name has to reflect the business behind the number. It should match the name customers know you by, ideally the name on your registration or your website and storefront. Meta rejects names that are generic category words, that contain a URL or phone number, that use unrelated brand names, or that read as a slogan. Punctuation and casing are checked too, so all-caps or decorative characters can trip a review.

    How the review works.

You submit the display name during number registration, through your provider or in Meta Business Manager. Review is usually quick. If it is rejected, you fix the name and submit again, and the number cannot send until a name is approved. Businesses that have completed Meta business verification generally have a smoother time, because Meta can match the submitted name against verified company records.

    Changing it later.

Display names can be changed after approval, but each change goes back through review, and there are limits on how often you can change within a period. That matters if you rebrand or if one number serves several trading names. Plan the name before you launch: pick the name customers will recognise in a notification, not an internal department label like Support Team or Sales Line 2.

    The Voltade take

We settle the display name before any build starts, because it is what customers actually see when a message lands and it is the slowest thing to change afterwards. In most cases the right answer is simply the company name people already know, with no decoration around it.
