What is agentic AI?
Agentic AI refers to AI systems that can plan, reason, and act independently to achieve goals — not just respond to prompts. It's the shift from AI as a tool you use to AI as a worker that operates.
From reactive to proactive.
Most AI tools today are reactive: you ask a question, you get an answer. Agentic AI flips this. You define a goal — "process all incoming quotation requests" or "screen job applications against these criteria" — and the AI figures out the steps, executes them, and handles exceptions along the way. It plans, acts, observes results, and adjusts.
Why it matters for business.
Agentic AI is what makes the jump from "AI assistant" to "AI worker" possible. Instead of augmenting a human (autocomplete, suggestions, drafts), agentic systems can own entire workflows end-to-end. This is where the real productivity gains are — not in making humans 10% faster, but in handling entire tasks that previously required headcount.
Where agentic AI is today.
The technology is production-ready for well-defined, bounded workflows: customer support, data entry, appointment booking, document processing. It's less mature for open-ended creative work or tasks requiring deep domain judgment. The sweet spot is repetitive work that follows patterns but has enough variation that simple automation breaks.
