AI agent vs chatbot — what's the difference?

A chatbot follows scripts. An AI agent understands context, connects to your systems, and takes real actions. The gap is like the difference between an FAQ page and a competent employee.

    What a chatbot actually does.

Traditional chatbots are decision trees wrapped in a chat interface. They recognise keywords or button presses, then serve pre-written responses. If the customer asks something outside the script, the bot fails or loops. They're cheap and fast to deploy, but they hit a ceiling quickly — especially when conversations are nuanced or require pulling data from other systems.

What an AI agent does differently.

An AI agent processes natural language, understands intent (even when phrased awkwardly), and takes multi-step actions. It can look up a customer's order in your CRM, check delivery status, calculate a revised quote, and send a WhatsApp reply — all in one turn. It handles edge cases, switches languages mid-conversation, and knows when to escalate to a human.

    When a chatbot is enough.

If your use case is simple and predictable — business hours, location, basic FAQ — a chatbot works fine. No need to over-engineer. But the moment you need the tool to access live data, handle multi-step workflows, or deal with varied customer phrasing, you need an agent. The cost difference between a chatbot and a custom agent has dropped significantly — for most businesses, the ROI of an agent justifies the investment.
