What is prompt engineering?
Prompt engineering is the practice of writing and refining the instructions given to an AI model so it produces accurate, consistent and useful output every time.
The simple explanation.
A prompt is the instruction you give an AI model. Prompt engineering is the unglamorous work of making that instruction precise enough to get the same good result every time. It is closer to writing a standard operating procedure for a new staff member than to programming. Vague in, vague out: ask for a reply to a customer and you get something generic. Specify the tone, the length, the information to include, and what to do when unsure, and you get something usable.
What a production prompt actually contains.
A working prompt for a business agent is not a clever sentence. It sets the role and scope, the tone your brand uses, the exact format of the output, the facts the agent may rely on, and the rules for escalating. It usually includes a few worked examples, because showing beats describing. It also states explicitly what to do when the answer is not available: say so and hand over, rather than guess. That last line prevents most embarrassing replies.
Where prompting stops being enough.
Prompting cannot give a model facts it does not have, and it cannot enforce a limit that really matters. If the agent needs your live stock levels, connect it to your inventory. If it must never discount beyond an agreed percentage, enforce that in the software, not in a polite instruction. Prompt engineering is one layer of a build. Teams that rely on it alone end up with an agent that behaves well in testing and improvises in production.
