What is a large language model?
A large language model (LLM) is an AI system trained on an enormous amount of written text so it can read a request in plain language and produce a useful written response.
The simple explanation.
A large language model is trained by reading a vast amount of writing and learning which words tend to follow which. That sounds thin, but at scale it produces something genuinely useful: software you can instruct in ordinary English instead of a programming language. Ask it to summarise a long email thread, draft a reply, or pull the delivery address out of a message, and it can. No technical knowledge is needed on your side, and no rules to cover every possible phrasing.
What it is good at, and what it is not.
Good at language: understanding a messy customer message, rephrasing, summarising, sorting, translating, drafting. Not good at facts about your business, because it has never seen your order book. Left alone, a model will produce a fluent answer about your stock levels that is simply invented. That is why serious deployments connect the model to real data and real actions rather than relying on what it appears to know. Treat it as an excellent reader and writer with no access to your records.
How a model becomes a business tool.
On its own, a model is a text box. It becomes useful when three things are added: your data, so answers are grounded in reality, tools, so it can look things up and take action, and limits, so it stays inside what your business allows. Those additions, not the raw model, are where the value and most of the build effort sit. The same model powers a toy demo and a production agent. The difference is everything wrapped around it.
