    What is the Model Context Protocol?

    The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI models to external tools and data through one common interface, instead of a custom connector for every pairing.

    The simple explanation.

    Before USB, every device needed its own cable, and a drawer full of chargers was normal. Connecting AI models to business software has been in a similar state: a bespoke piece of plumbing built for every model and every tool. The Model Context Protocol replaces that with one common connector. A system exposes its data and its actions once in the MCP format, and any AI assistant that speaks the protocol can use them, with no separate integration written for each combination of model and system.

    Why it matters commercially.

    Integration work is where AI budgets quietly disappear, and it is also what locks a business to one vendor. A shared protocol shifts that balance. The connector you build for your order system keeps working when you change the model or the assistant your team uses. For an SME, the practical benefit is fewer one off connectors to maintain and a shorter path from wanting an assistant to have access to something, to actually granting that access.

    What it does not solve.

    A protocol is a common language, not a security model and not a substitute for good design. You still decide which data an assistant may read, which actions it may take, who is authenticated and what gets logged. A badly scoped MCP connection is simply a faster way to expose the wrong thing. Treat it as the wiring standard, and keep the same care over permissions, limits and audit trails you would apply to any other integration.
