What is a tool call?
A tool call is the moment an AI model stops writing text and instead runs a real action in another system, such as looking up a customer record or sending a WhatsApp message.
The simple explanation.
An AI model on its own can only produce words. A tool call is how it reaches out and touches your business. Think of a capable assistant who, instead of telling you what your stock level probably is, walks over to the warehouse system and checks. The model decides that a lookup is needed, names the tool, hands over the details such as an order number, and waits for the real answer before replying to your customer.
What happens during a tool call.
Three things happen in order. The agent reads the conversation and decides an action is needed. It names the tool and fills in the inputs, for example a get_order request with order number SG10428. Your system runs that request and returns real data, and only then does the agent write its reply using that data. The important part is that the answer comes from your records, not from the model's memory. If the tool fails, a well built agent says so rather than guessing.
Why tool calls matter for your business.
Tool calls are the line between a chatbot that talks and an agent that works. A chatbot can describe your return policy. An agent that can call tools will find the order, check whether it is inside the return window, create the return in your system, and send the customer a confirmation. Every tool you connect widens what the agent can finish on its own, and every call leaves a record you can audit later when someone asks what the agent actually did.
