    What is an audit trail?

An audit trail is a time-stamped record of every action taken in a system, showing what happened, who or what did it, and when.

    The simple explanation.

An audit trail answers three questions after the fact: what happened, who did it, and when. Every status change, every message sent, every field edited, every automated action gets a line with a timestamp. It is not glamorous and nobody reads it on a good day. On a bad day, when a customer says they were never told about a price change or an order shipped to the wrong address, it turns an argument into a five-minute check.

    What a useful trail records.

The record affected, the action taken, the value before and the value after, the actor, and the time. The actor matters most once software is doing the work: a line should say whether a person or an automation made the change, and which one. Trails should be append-only, so entries cannot be edited later, and kept long enough to cover your dispute and reporting windows. A trail that can be quietly rewritten is not evidence.

Why it matters more with AI involved.

When an agent replies to customers or creates orders, trust rests on being able to inspect its work. A good trail shows what the agent was asked, what data it looked at, what it decided and what it did, so a supervisor can review a weekly sample rather than reading every message. It makes disputes and compliance requests routine, and it is what lets you widen an agent's remit on evidence rather than hope.

    The Voltade take

Envoy CRM logs the actions our agents take against the record they touched, so a WhatsApp reply, an OCR extraction or an order update can be traced back to the moment and the input that produced it. We treat that log as a delivery requirement, not an optional extra.
