What is NLP?
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the AI technology that lets machines understand, interpret, and respond to human language — the foundation behind chatbots, AI agents, voice assistants, and search engines.
What NLP does.
NLP bridges the gap between how humans communicate and how computers process information. It handles tasks like: understanding the meaning of a sentence (not just the keywords), detecting sentiment (is this customer happy or frustrated?), extracting structured data from unstructured text (pulling dates, amounts, and names from an email), translating between languages, and generating human-like responses.
NLP in business applications.
Every time an AI agent reads a WhatsApp message and understands the customer's intent, that's NLP. When it detects that a message is in Mandarin and responds accordingly, that's NLP. When it extracts a delivery address from a rambling email, that's NLP. The technology is invisible to end users — they just see an agent that "understands" them.
The current state.
Large language models (GPT-4, Claude, Gemini) have made NLP dramatically more capable. Five years ago, building a multilingual AI agent was a research project. Today, it's a deployment decision. The accuracy of language understanding has reached a point where AI agents can handle real customer conversations — not perfectly, but reliably enough for production use with proper guardrails.
The Voltade take
NLP is what lets our agents understand your customers — in English, Mandarin, Malay, or Singlish. We don't just deploy a language model; we tune it to understand your industry terminology, your product names, and how your customers actually talk.
