    What is an automation trigger?

An automation trigger is the specific event that tells an automated workflow to start running, such as a new WhatsApp message arriving or an invoice being uploaded.

    The simple explanation.

Every automation needs a starting gun. The trigger is the event that fires it: a WhatsApp message from a new number, a form submitted on your website, a delivery order photographed and uploaded, or a deal moving to the Won stage in your CRM. Until the trigger happens, the automation sits idle and costs you nothing. When it happens, the rest of the steps run in order. Choosing the trigger is the first design decision in any automation.

    Event triggers and scheduled triggers.

Two families cover most cases. Event triggers react the moment something happens, which is what you want for customer-facing work where speed is the whole point: a lead answered in two minutes converts better than one answered tomorrow. Scheduled triggers run on a clock, every morning at 8am or on the first of the month, which suits reporting, reminders and reconciliation. Plenty of workflows use both, with an event starting the job and a schedule chasing anything left unfinished.

    Getting triggers right.

Two failure modes show up again and again. A trigger that is too broad fires on everything and buries your team in noise, so add conditions: only enquiries from new numbers, only invoices above a value. A trigger that fires twice on the same record creates duplicates, so the workflow needs a way to recognise work it has already done. Deciding what should not start the automation matters as much as deciding what should.

    The Voltade take

In Envoy CRM the common triggers are already wired: an inbound WhatsApp message, a new lead, a stage change on a deal, an uploaded document. For custom agents we set the trigger conditions with you, then tighten them after watching real traffic, because a first version is always either too eager or too quiet.
