    What is an AI chatbot?

An AI chatbot is a conversational interface powered by language models that can understand natural language and generate human-like responses — a step up from scripted bots, but not the same as a full AI agent.

    How AI chatbots work.

Modern AI chatbots use large language models (like GPT, Claude, or Gemini) to understand what users are saying and generate relevant responses. Unlike rule-based chatbots that match keywords to pre-written answers, AI chatbots can handle varied phrasing, follow conversational context, and respond naturally. They're trained on broad knowledge but can be fine-tuned for specific business domains.

    What they're good at.

AI chatbots excel at conversational FAQ, product recommendations, basic troubleshooting, and information retrieval. They can be deployed quickly on websites, WhatsApp, or other messaging platforms. For businesses with high-volume, repetitive enquiries that don't require system integration, an AI chatbot can significantly reduce support load.

    Where they fall short.

An AI chatbot on its own can only talk — it can't act. It can't check your CRM for a customer's order status, book an appointment in your calendar, or generate a quotation from your pricing sheet. That's the gap between a chatbot and an AI agent. The chatbot handles conversation; the agent handles conversation plus action. Many businesses start with a chatbot and graduate to an agent when they hit the ceiling.
