Build vs buy — when to build custom software.

Buy when an off-the-shelf tool fits 80%+ of your needs. Build when your workflow is the competitive advantage, existing tools don't integrate well, or you're spending more time working around a tool than with it.

    The case for buying.

SaaS tools are battle-tested, maintained by someone else, and ready today. If your needs are standard — CRM, email marketing, project management, basic support — buying is almost always the right call. You get updates, security patches, and a support team. The cost is predictable. Don't build what isn't a differentiator.

    The case for building.

When your process is unique to your industry or business. When you're stitching together 4-5 tools with brittle integrations. When the SaaS tool's limitations are costing you time (workarounds, manual steps, data re-entry). When the data you need to connect doesn't fit the tool's model. Custom software — especially custom AI agents — makes sense when the cost of working around is higher than the cost of building right.

    The middle path.

Most businesses don't need to build an entire system from scratch. The smart approach: keep your existing tools, build an AI agent that sits between them. The agent handles the integration, the intelligence, and the automation — your team keeps the tools they know. It's building the glue, not replacing the furniture.

    The Voltade take

We don't replace your existing tools — we build the intelligent layer between them. Most of our projects integrate with 2-5 platforms the business already uses. We build only what the market doesn't offer.
