What is intelligent document processing?
Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) uses AI to read, understand, and extract data from documents (invoices, forms, delivery orders, contracts) and feed it into your business systems automatically.
Updated
Beyond basic OCR.
OCR reads text from images. IDP understands what the text means. It knows that "Total: $4,500" is an amount due, that "Net 30" means payment terms, and that "Delivery to: 123 Main St" is a shipping address. IDP combines OCR, NLP, and machine learning to extract structured data from unstructured documents, even when formats vary between vendors.
Common use cases.
Invoice processing: extract vendor, line items, amounts, due dates from any invoice format. Delivery order processing: capture item details, quantities, and delivery information. HR documents: extract candidate information from resumes in varied formats. Compliance documents: pull key data from regulatory filings. The pattern: any process where someone currently reads a document and types data into a system.
How it fits into workflows.
IDP is most valuable as part of a larger automation: document arrives (email, WhatsApp, upload) → IDP extracts data → AI agent validates against business rules → data enters your system → confirmation sent to sender. The end-to-end automation means a document that took 10-15 minutes of manual processing now takes seconds, with fewer errors.
The Voltade take
We build IDP into our AI agents. Your team sends a photo of a document via WhatsApp, and the agent reads it, extracts the data, validates it, and updates your system. No manual entry, no switching between apps, no errors from re-keying.
