# What is ETL?

> ETL pulls data from your systems, cleans it and loads it into one place for reporting. Learn the three steps and when to use ETL over a live integration.

ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) is the process of pulling data out of one system, reshaping it into a consistent format, and loading it into another, usually a database used for reporting.

## What it does for your business.

ETL is how scattered data becomes a report you can trust. Extract, Transform, Load: pull the numbers out of each system, reshape them so they agree with each other, and load them into one place for reporting. Without it, sales figures live in the CRM, revenue lives in accounting, and delivery performance lives in a spreadsheet, and every management meeting opens with an argument about whose number is correct. ETL is the boring plumbing that ends that argument.

## The three steps in plain English.

Extract is copying data out of each source, usually on a schedule. Transform is the real work: making dates match, standardising currencies, deciding that two slightly different spellings of a company name are the same customer, and dropping test records. Load is writing the cleaned result into a reporting database. Transform absorbs most of the effort, because every system spells things a little differently and the rules for reconciling that are specific to your business.

## ETL or a live integration.

They answer different questions. ETL runs in batches and is built for analysis: how did last quarter go, which products move fastest, which customers are slipping. A live integration is built for operations: this order needs to be in accounting now. Do not use one for the other. A nightly batch is a poor way to run a customer conversation, and a real-time sync is an expensive way to produce a monthly report.
